Library Assistant Job 

Job Title: LIBRARY ASSISTANT (Technology Focus)


Position Type:  Part-time 20 hours per week

Pay Range: $16-$18/hour

Benefits: The library offers paid vacation, sick leave, and 11 paid holidays per year. 

Supervisor: Library Director

Schedule: The Library Assistant works a rotating shift which includes evening and weekend hours.

Description of Your Role

The technology focused library assistant is a friendly, helpful, observant person who provides great customer service to both the community and coworkers by stepping in to help where needed.  He or she supports a variety of positions including circulation, reference, and programs.  He or she is someone who can promote lifelong learning and make community connections by supporting patrons with basic technology questions and basic computer classes.  This person must also be familiar with social media and will assist the director with upkeep of the library website.  He or she is both detail and people oriented, diplomatic, professional, calm, and able to flow with occasional chaos. 

This job description outlines general responsibilities; it is a guideline and not meant to detail every task that may be required of you.

Job Responsibilities: Perform public service duties including reference assistance, reader’s advisory services, and circulation.  Loan library materials to patrons and collect returned materials, and sort and reshelve library materials.  Assist in program planning, including children’s story time and summer reading.  Assist patrons with basic technology questions, and support patron technology education.  Under supervision of library director, maintain website and event calendar, assist with social media posts and meeting room reservation requests, events, and outreach. 

Qualifications:

Essential Functions:

  • Assist in the selection of books, materials, and resources that reflect the interests and needs of patrons

  • Collaborate with schools, after school programs, and community groups to address informational and educational needs

  • Develop marketing materials and strategies to promote library services and programs

  • Assist in managing the library’s social media and website

  • Work in conjunction with staff to plan/implement programs

  • Assist in daily library tasks such as issuing new library cards, checking out library materials, receiving items, shelving books

  • Locate books and reference materials to assist patrons

  • Explains computer systems, card files, and other references sources and how to use those such systems to patrons

  • Assist in preparing exhibits, seasonal displays, and bulletin boards throughout the library

  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent experience

  • Ability and connections to effectively interface with the community

  • Strong social skills. Candidate should feel comfortable making introductions,

  • and networking across the La Conner and SITC communities

  • Ability to positively represent the La Conner Swinomish Library when networking

  • Able to identify, track, and use relevant data for this position

  • Ability to identify areas of equity gaps in library services and suggest ways to improve these gaps

  • Strong communication, interpersonal and computer skills

  • Proficient with MS 365, Outlook, social media, and websites

  • Ability to work with independently and as part of a team

Preferred qualifications:

  • Two years of experience in a library support or paraprofessional position or an equivalent combination of library experience, relevant curriculum or

    program development, instruction, and presentation experience

  • One year of experience providing reader’s advisory and ready reference

  • Previous experience creating social media and website posts

  • Close connections and ties with the La Conner Community (businesses, people, institutions, etc.)
